Search Engines and Indexes

The most important search instruments that your website needs to be found in are, in order of significance: Google (the priority, not only for business reasons, but others such as democratic search, etc.), YAHOO!, MSN, Ask Jeeves, AOL, Alta Vista and DOGPILE. One generally needn't submit to Google, AOL or Netscape (both of which integrate Google, thus dmoz as well). But here is Google's submission page if you'd prefer to be certain. Submit once and only once. You may not see page rank for several months or more. This isn't because Google doesn't know that your website exists, but because of Aging Delay. It is much more difficult for new websites to budge the boulder than it was a couple years ago.

Search Engine Submittal Is Easy

1. To help you perform better in Google, AOL and Netscape you should submit to dmoz (Open Directory Project). dmoz is free, though they ask that you to provide editorial assistance. Don't expect results, if any, for at least a year.

2. To be found in the major search tools that are Alta Vista, DOGPILE and YAHOO! you should to submit to Yahoo Search Submit Express (no longer Overture Site Match). This will also place your website in important engines like Overture, metacrawler, alltheweb, Lycos, excite and webcrawler. We suggest this as elemental, especially in view of Google's Aging Delay (which many web masters call the "sandbox"). However, if you wish to forego any expense at least be certain to submit to YAHOO! at no cost. Submit once and only once.

3. Neither Ask Jeeves, powered by TEOMA, nor MSN any longer accept paid submissions. They've been using the more democratic method which took Google to the top. This may account for the strong increase in the popularity of Ask Jeeves in the last several months, though not, at least thus far, for MSN. There is no need to submit to either, but in the event that your web site isn't showing in MSN you can visit their free submission page.

In addition, selfpromotion's Robert Woodhead has suggested submission to the below directories, engines and indexes, most of which are free. Though we've gleaned the best of Woodhead's list we do not think all are indispensible. Those with * are of various importance.

    Directories (requesting editorial assistance)

      HotRate

      Joeant

      Zeal

Viola Fair Recommended Directories

    Engines

      Aeiwi

Alexa * (elemental - be certain to submit - an Amazon company)

      entireweb *

      ExactSeek *

      LOOKSEEK

      MegaCrawler

      Search Hippo

      SearchIt

      Subjex

      WEB SEARCH

    Indexes

About (click the editor whose picture appears above your category and inquire)

      Ditto (images)

      GoGuides

     blowsearch

JAYDE * (comes with membership to WebPro World, a top web master forum)

      National Directory (a submission service)

      OnSeek * (an exactseek index)

      Qango

      Searchit

      SearchKing

      SearchtheWeb

      searchwords

      Turnpike

Freelancers in a literary field may wish to submit to:

      FREELANCE Work Exchange

      PREDITORS & EDITORS

Though quite a list, we suggest manual submission as elemental. There is no way around that. However, you may wish to investigate INeedHits which will manually initiate your site to the following important instruments: Google, YAHOO!, MSN, Alta Vista, dmoz, alltheweb, entireweb, Jayde and ExactSeek. This is basic, not express, submission. You will see better results by going the extra dollars via Yahoo Search Submit Express. And don't expect to see results in dmoz for a good long time, if at all. INeedHits does submissions without guarantee of results. They will, however, take care of fundamental web site submittal if you'd like to save a few hours or forego a little anxiety at the start. It's fairly cheap.

Last but not least, all know of Google's AdWords and YAHOO's enormously expensive Yahoo! Express. Let who practice power advertising be aware that there exists a third entity capable of delivering ROI that rivals Google and YAHOO! at Kanoodle.
